This project consisted of the development of a self-published illustration fanzine, with a collaborative nature. The publication was named Not All That Shines Is Gold, gathered the contribution of fifty-four illustrators or designers, and was launched on November 9th, 2013 in Canhoto, in Travessa de Cedofeita, Porto.
We intended to create an artefact capable of valuing, first, the materiality of the printed book, through the exceptionality of the piece. On the other hand, we also aimed at valuing the production process (passing through design, production and distribution of a publication in this case). The entire process, from editing to promotion, is detailed in this document.
We’ve researched a few movements and projects that explore the book as a physical object and as an intellectual vehicle, which served as reference for the present work. We also raised issues concerning the designer’s role as author and editor and independent publishing as a discipline that promotes the creation of a community.
